Kurt Aland:
The early church and "the end of the time of the world"

«In order to understand these reasons, it is necessary to visualize the condition of the church around the year 150. The early or primitive period was definitely over. Paul and the Twelve had blended, so far as most were concerned, into a unified group, and the tensions between them were forgotten. Christians were resigned to the fact that the Lord had not yet returned. First generation Christians had been firmly convinced that they would see the Last Day and they expected the end of the world at any moment. Even the fact that Christians were dying before the end came could not shake this expectation. The second generation continued in this conviction. Ignatius of Antioch declared, "The last times have come." Gradually, however, around the year 100, the change began to come. To be sure, the Epistle of Barnabas said: "Close at hand is the day." But 2 Clement said: "Thus we do not want to despair, but want to endure in hope . . . since we do not know the day of the appearance of God."

The Shepherd of Hermas suggested a solution to the problem of the Lord's failure to come: God had delayed the return of Christ in order to give Christians the opportunity for a second repentance through which they could wash away the sins committed since their conversion. Of course, this time of penitence was seen as having a limit; but once the theory that the time of the Last Judgment had been delayed was proposed, it soon took hold and found acceptance. Gradually the idea of a limited, final opportunity for repentance faded more and more into the background, until finally the conviction gained ground that Christ's return and the day of judgment would indeed take place, but in an indefinite future.

People no longer lived as if each day might be the last but began quite unconsciously to make themselves at home in this world. Hand in hand with that went a change in the standards applied to their own actions as well as those of others. The moral demands still remained quite rigorous, but they were no longer as absolute as they had been in the first decades. Also, the structure of the congregations underwent change».
